Setting the Land Audio URL in Second Life

In-World How to set your parcel music URL so visitors can hear your stream.

Your Stream URL

This is the URL you need to set as the land music URL. It is the same regardless of whether you are using Icecast or ShoutCast as your source protocol.

http://your-stream.fixedbit.stream/stream

Setting the Music URL on Your Parcel

  1. Stand on your land parcel in Second Life.
  2. Right-click the ground and select About Land. Alternatively, go to World > About Land in the menu bar.
  3. Click the Sound tab (in some viewers, this may be labeled Media or Audio).
  4. Find the Music URL field. Paste your stream URL: http://your-stream.fixedbit.stream/stream
  5. Close the About Land dialog. The music URL is saved automatically.

Permissions Required

You must be the land owner or belong to the land group with appropriate permissions to change the music URL. If you are renting land from an estate, check with the estate owner about media permissions.

Listener Requirements

Visitors to your parcel need streaming music enabled in their viewer to hear your stream.

  1. In your Second Life viewer, go to Preferences (Ctrl+P / Cmd+P).
  2. Navigate to Sound & Media.
  3. Make sure Allow Streaming Music (or Enable Streaming Music) is checked.
  4. Adjust the Music Volume slider to a comfortable level.

Most viewers also show a play/pause button for parcel music in the toolbar. Visitors may need to click play to start listening.

Troubleshooting

No sound playing

Check that your DJ software is connected and streaming. Verify the URL is correct (no extra spaces). Make sure your viewer has streaming music enabled and the volume is not muted.

Visitors cannot hear the stream

Each visitor needs streaming music enabled in their own viewer preferences. They may also need to click the play button in their toolbar. The music URL is per-parcel, so make sure visitors are standing on your parcel.

Stream cuts out when crossing parcel boundaries

Each parcel has its own music URL. If your venue spans multiple parcels, set the same URL on all of them. Alternatively, merge the parcels into one if you own them.
